Cardano is known for being more decentralized, resilient, and secure with built-in governance. So why was World Mobile Chain built on Base instead of Cardano?
Hey @Yisus, really good question.
To clarify: World Mobile didn’t build its chain on Base. They built their own blockchain — World Mobile Chain (WMC) — using the OP Stack, which is the same framework used by Optimism and Base. WMC is a Layer 3 chain that rolls up to Base for settlement. So Base is the settlement layer, not the environment where WMC actually runs.
Why this setup? WMC needs to support real-time telco data, millions of transactions, and low fees, that requires serious throughput. By using the OP Stack and customizing it (like replacing ETH gas with WMTx), they built a chain purpose-fit for telecom infrastructure.
Cardano still plays a key role in the broader ecosystem. WMTx is available on Cardano and always will be, which means Cardano DEXs and native staking remain part of the plan. And in the future, deeper integration or interoperability with Cardano (or other chains) is still on the table, when the tech makes sense for it.
In short: WMC needed a high-performance custom chain, so they built one. It rolls up to Base today for efficiency, but the token and ecosystem still span multiple chains, including Cardano.
Thanks for the detailed breakdown, this actually clears up a lot.
I was under the impression WMC had moved to Base, not just rolling up to it. Big difference. Knowing it’s a custom L3 using OP Stack and not some code living directly on Base puts things in a new light.
Still, part of me wishes Cardano had been ready when World Mobile needed it. Would’ve loved to see WMC built natively on Cardano, a fully decentralized, governance-ready chain. But I get it, real-world telco demands low latency, massive throughput, and working infrastructure now, not “someday.”
Glad to hear Cardano still plays a big role, and that native staking and DEX activity aren’t going anywhere. Hopefully, once the sidechain/partner chain framework matures, we’ll see even tighter integration.
Appreciate the clarity. Multi-chain done right might just be the best path forward for everyone.
