Blockchains power finance and NFTs, but they weren’t built to deliver cellular or mesh internet. That’s changing with Optimism’s OP Stack, an open-source, EVM-compatible framework that provides a drop-in engine for chains with high throughput and low fees.
World Mobile Chain (WMC) runs on Base, using OP Stack to operate as a Layer 3 telecom network. Instead of giant towers, WMC relies on EarthNodes (its high-performance validators) and community-run AirNodes that beam coverage directly to devices. The result is a fully decentralized network with low latency, dependable performance and truly affordable connectivity.
OP Stack: Modular, Optimistic Rollup Engine
OP Stack uses an optimistic rollup design, assuming transactions are valid unless challenged via fraud proofs within a seven-day window. This approach delivers high throughput and low fees, while anchoring security on Base and ultimately on Ethereum.
Key modules and metrics:
- Sequencer & Block Time (~2 s): Proposes new blocks every two seconds, batching thousands of transactions off-chain before submitting rollup proofs to Base.
- Fee Savings: WMC L3 inherits Base’s 90 - 95 % gas savings versus Ethereum L1 and by packing hundreds (and more) of Layer 3 interactions into each Base rollup proof, per-transaction fees on WMC can be a small fraction of even Base’s costs.
- Bridges: Trust-minimized, fraud-proof pathways move tokens and data securely between Base and WMC.
- Security Modules: Fraud proofs and continuous monitoring ensure any invalid state root can be challenged.
- Governance Tools: On-chain voting, upgradeable contracts and permissioning modules let you evolve your network without hard forks.
Battle-tested on Base’s mainnet, OP Stack gives you out-of-the-box support for MetaMask, Hardhat and Truffle, plus Base-level security, so you can focus on your application, whether that is DeFi, gaming or decentralized telecom.
World Mobile Chain: The Telecom-Grade Layer 3
World Mobile Chain runs as a Layer 3 network on Base using OP Stack, transforming rollups into a purpose-built telecom platform:
- Hourly Validator Rotation: Validators and sequencers rotate every hour to maintain decentralization, distribute control and spread rewards evenly.
- Telecom-Grade Performance: WMC prioritizes low latency and high reliability for voice, SMS and data, delivering true telecom-grade service.
- Native AirNode & WMTx Integration: AirNodes beam coverage directly to devices, and WMTx powers on-chain transactions and staking rewards.
By combining OP Stack’s modular foundation with these telecom-focused features, WMC bridges blockchain and real-world connectivity. Anyone can host an AirNode, earn WMTx and help bring affordable, dependable internet to underserved communities.
Together: Scaling Internet Access with Base and WMC
Here’s how each layer combines to deliver secure, efficient and decentralized connectivity:
- Ethereum L1 – The ultimate security anchor for Base, ensuring on-chain finality
- Base (OP Stack L2) – Fast, low-cost execution and the immediate security layer that WMC builds on
- World Mobile Chain (L3) – Telecom operations driven by decentralized, community-run hardware
This layered model scales not just transactions but access itself. It removes traditional gatekeepers, embraces open-source upgrades (WMC’s telecom modules flow back into OP Stack), and delivers a modular, future-proof network. The result is affordable, reliable internet for communities that need it most and a shift to community-owned connectivity.
